Please Please Me (1963) - The Beatles very first album has some great songs on it including the title track, the opening track "I Her Standing There," and the great cover "Twist & Shout" but it also has a much higher percentage of clunkers than most Beatles albums. In fact I'd say at least half of this album just isn't that good. It's interesting from an historical stand point and sometimes it can even be quite enjoyable to listen to, but I'd probably make it one of my last albums if I were just getting into The Beatles.

With The Beatles (1963) - The Beatles second album includes a few nice songs but it's largely quite forgettable due to the large amount of covers.

A Hard Day's Night (1964) - The Beatles third album is when they really started to come into their own. While their first two albums only included 8 originals each, A Hard Day's Night is nothing but Lennon/McCartney originals. It includes some of The Beatles very best early pop & rock n roll music. If you find yourself more drawn to their early pop songs then this may be a great album to get started with.

Beatles For Sale (1964) - I do think this album is somewhat underrated but it is definitely a step backwards from A Hard Day's Night. It includes 6 mostly forgettable covers. But the originals are quite nice. "I'm a Loser" & "Every Little Thing" are among the highlights.

Help! (1965) - This was another step forward. It included some of The Beatles biggest hit songs including the title track "Help!" and the legendary ballad "Yesterday." "Ticket to Ride," "I've Just Seen a Face," and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" are also among the album's highlights. It's a great album with a couple of miss steps ("Dizzy Miss Lizzy" and "Act Naturally" are both awful covers that shouldn't have been included on the album.)

Rubber Soul (1965) - A huge step forward. Includes the first use of a sitar on a western pop record on "Norwegian Wood" which may be favorite song on the album. Rubber Soul includes many of The Beatles greatest songs like "Nowhere Man," "In My Life," "Girl," "Michelle," and "I'm Looking Through You."

Revolver (1966) - Again with the step forward. The Beatles were progressing at an unbelievable rate during these years. From "I Want To Hold Your Hand" to "Tomorrow Never Knows" in 2 years? Are you kidding me? Absolutely mind blowing. One of The Beatles greatest albums. There are no weak songs. Many consider it to be The Beatles very best album.

Sgt. Pepper (1967) - It's become somewhat hip to say that Sgt. Pepper is overrated. But it's not. It's a truly incredible album. I find every single song on this album to be a thoroughly enjoyable listen. They are all essential in my view. Includes the absolute greatest album closer of all time, "A Day in the Life."

Magical Mystery Tour (1967) - This was The Beatles at their most purposefully "psychedelic." To me that's a good thing. It includes some of The Beatles most incredible psychedelic masterpieces "I Am The Walrus" & "Strawberry Fields Forever."

The White Album (1968) - My favorite Beatles album. That being said, it's probably not a good one to get started with. It's probably too sprawling for a first time listener. It's not as consistent as Sgt. Pepper or Revolver but for me it's even more endlessly interesting. There's so many different styles of music on this album and to my ears they are all done perfectly.

Yellow Submarine (1969) - Probably The Beatles least essential album as it includes only four songs that are not heard elsewhere. But of those four songs two are really great "Hey Bulldog" and particularly the very underrated "It's All Too Much." I actually recommend getting the 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack instead as it replaces the rather boring incidental "film music" that makes up much of the Yellow Submarine album with remixed, remastered versions of many of The Beatles greatest hits.

Abbey Road (1969) - Possibly The Beatles most "modern" sounding album as it was actually the final album they recorded and the only one they recorded on the then new 8 track recording machine at Abbey Road studios. Includes the amazing second side suite and some of their most well known songs like "Here Comes The Sun," "Something," and "Come Together." Probably a pretty good first album to get if you are new to The Beatles.

Let It Be (1970) - Let It Be was actually recorded prior to Abbey Road but had been shelved do to The Beatles being unhappy with the recordings. While it's often seen as somewhat of a disappointment compared to The Beatles other incredible albums that's really quite ridiculous when you look at the track listing and see that it includes absolutely killer songs like "Let It Be," "Get Back," "I've Got A Feeling," "Across The Universe," & "Two of Us." Let It Be has a more funky laid back feeling than any other Beatles album. Let It Be... Naked probably has a better track listing but I think they "cleaned up" the sound too much, the original's "fuzzy" sound was part of it's charm and fit the songs better.

Music purchases last year reached 1.5 billion and believe it or not this is the 5th year in a row to make it to a billion. Furthermore this also marks five years where piracy has been quite popular so how on earth have artists got the right to complain?

It would seem that out of everyone Jackson has the biggest sales of last year and I have to say I am not surprised because of his death. Lady Gaga was second on the list with the biggest selling artist for digital copies. Online sales made over 15 million. The Beatles came in as the biggest selling group and that has to be down to the fact the game was released last year.

Something that is on the rise is the amount of digital sales we are seeing with over 40% coming from this way of buying music.

Is There Really An Excuse For Illegal Downloading?

With new bits of software coming in like Spotify it can be very difficult for people to think of excuses on why they are getting free music. It would seem that Spotify is free to have on any PC and only £10 a month to have on something like the iPhone so I see no excuses that can be made. Paying out for this will cost you a lot less than the bill through your letterbox about piracy.

This year is going to set a trend for people taking up instruments like guitars and drum kits. On top of this DJ equipment sales are set to rise. Perhaps down to the sales of DJ Hero?

And Venus could not have been a more fitting name as this little device screams beauty and grace when viewed at any angle. It has a uniquely designed dual display with a touch sensitive screen. And what we love in its design is extended all the way under its skin. It has loads of features that will definitely make this phone a must have for those looking for a mobile phone with both beauty and brains, so to speak.

For starters, the Venus has the capacity for one thousand contacts which has room for five phone numbers and two email addresses each. Contacts can be organized into caller groups and embed each with their respective photos and any of the sixteen ring tones available. Other important features such as text and a9530 phone, a calendar and alarm clock – even a world clock, a notepad, calculator, speaker phone and voice memo recorder.

Aside from those usual assortments of mobile phone features, other high end capabilities are also offered by the Venus. These include and are not limited to:a9530 tv phone, instant messaging, USB mass storage functionalities, stereo Bluetooth, Web browser and PC Syncing. And not only that, the Venus also supports 3G, utilizing the great services of EV-DO.

The Venus of course comes with its own music player which supports most popular formats such as MP3, AAC, eAAC, and WMA. The player interface looks neat and has onscreen music controls. Like dedicated media players, the Venus can display album art when a track is being played. The tracks are organized by artist, album and genre automatically, and you may even create your own user playlists. Playback options like shuffle and repeat are also offered. While the sound on the Venus is already exceptional on its own, the user may also apply any of the eleven equalizer presets. Unlike most handsets that offers music playback that shares its memory with the phones other functions, the Venus has a music only dedicated memory of 64 MB right out of the box. And if that proves to be insufficient in the long run, you can add more storage with the use of the expansion slot which supports up to eight gigabytes of microSD.

Although they were really only an active band for rather short period of time, they recorded many of the greatest albums in rock history. In fact they recorded so many great albums that I will have to shave off some really good ones to keep this list at a mere seven greatest albums.

#1 The White Album

The Beatles self titled double album quickly got the nickname "The White Album" upon it's release in 1968 and the name has stuck even 40 years later. While many find fault with this album due to it's sprawling nature and experimental tracks like "Wild Honey Pie" & "Revolution #9," I find the album endlessly enthralling because of these very same points.

It has so many great songs in so many different styles. It's like taking a walk through popular music history at that time. And when you get to "Revolution #9" it's like falling into a black hole or opening up a secret pathway to some strange alternate reality. I think it's a distant future we cannot yet envision. Some look at the stranger, more difficult tracks on this album as a fault. As reasons why it's not as great as Revolver or Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I look at them as a strength.

But certainly the album has a lot more going for it than experimental music. It's got beautiful ballads like "Blackbird," "I Will," & "Julia." It's got great rockers like "Everbody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me & My Monkey" & the ground breaking "Helter Skelter."

It's got one of George Harrison's most powerful songs in "While My Guitar Gentley Weeps" which features a young Eric Clapton on lead guitar. It's got "Dear Prudence," "Happiness Is A Warm Gun," "Cry Baby Cry," "Back In The USSR," & "Sexy Sadie."

So many truly great songs in so many differing styles. It's a truly mesmerizing record that only gets better the more you listen to it. In my view it's the pinnacle of rock music to date.

#2 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

While The White Album is sprawling landscape, Sgt Pepper's is more like a trip to the carnival. It's a far more cohesive album. But that's not to say it's without it's unexpected turns, in fact every song on this album is quite different than the one that came before it. The difference is that on Sgt. Pepper's the songs all somehow feel connected despite being so different from each other.

While the album has more than it's share of great songs, it's really the overall feeling of the album that keeps me going back to it. I know it's become hip to hate on this album and to say it's overrated but I really feel that the people who say that aren't truly listening. This is a special album. Every song fits into the whole and more than any other Beatles album in my view, it has no weak tracks. Even Revolver (which I think is their second most consistant album) has "Yellow Submarine" which while a fun singalong does grate my nerves with it's placement right in the middle of the album.

As far as being "overrated," in my view any album that ends with the greatest song of all time cannot possibly be overrated. And "A Day In The Life" is exactly that, the greatest song of all time.

#3 Revolver

Revolver is a lot like Sgt. Pepper as far as song quality and the variety of styles without the same feeling of album cohesiveness. It sounds more like a collection of excellent songs. And there's certainly nothing wrong with a collection of great songs. Some of Paul McCartney's most unforgetable songs are on this album including "Eleanor Rigby," "Here, There, & Everywhere," & "For No One." It ends with the mind bending "Tomorrow Never Knows" which even 42 years later, still sounds like the future.

My one gripe with Revolver is that at this point I am a bit sick of "Yellow Submarine." Don't get me wrong, I like the song for what it is. But it doesn't work very well as an album track, it grows tiresome with repeated listening. I feel the same way about Ringo's rewrite on Abbey Road, "Octopus's Garden."

#4 Abbey Road

Abbey Road's second side may be The Beatles greatest achievement. It's an incredibly smooth but exciting ride. What I like about the suite is that it's not overdone. It's not heavy handed. It's all connected but they don't beat you over the head with that fact. It done in a more subtle manner and I really think that makes it more enjoyable.

But there's more to the album than the celebrated second side. The first half has some of The Beatles greatest songs such as "Oh Darling," "Something," "Come Together," & "I Want You (She's So Heavy.)"

#5 Magical Mystery Tour

Magical Mystery Tour was originally released as an EP in the UK but is now officially an album release in the Beatles discography. It was released as an LP in America using some previously released singles (the great "Strawberry Fields Forever" & "Penny Lane" most importantly) to pad the British EP into a full length album.

Because of this background many people don't consider it when ranking the albums, and I do think that history does somehow take away from the album somewhat. Psychologically it makes it feel more tacked together.

But when forgetting all of that, it's really an incredible trippy journey. It's The Beatles at their most purposefully psychedelic. To many they probably took it too far with some of the songs on this album ("Flying" & "Blue Jay Way" for example) but I love the "studio as an instrument" ideal. These songs still hold up today as great pieces of psychedelic music.

#6 Rubber Soul

Rubber Soul has a rather ridiculous amount of stunning songs on it. "Girl," "In My Life," "Nowhere Man," "Michelle," "I'm Looking Through You," & "Norwegian Wood" are just some of the great tunes on this album. But that being said, it doesn't rank quite as high as the albums above

for me because of a few clunkers (by Beatles standards anyway) that bring down the album. In particular I'm talking about "What Goes On," "Wait," & "Run for Your Life."

#7 Let It Be

Let It Be is often looked upon as a failure or as one of The Bealtes worst albums. You know you are doing pretty good when an album that has songs like "Two Of Us," "Across The Universe," "Let It Be," "I've Got A Feeling," & "Get Back" is considered a disappointment.

But it wasn't so much the songs that disappointed people about Let It Be, it was the haphazard sounding production that turned people off. Personally, I now think that's very endearing.

But with "Dig A Pony" not being among The Beatles greatest and "One After 909" actually being one of The Beatles most annoying recordings in my opinion along with George Harrison's somewhat subpar offerings this time around ("I Me Mine" & "For You Blue") the album does indeed not stack up as high as the albums I've ranked above it.

The country pop has its roots in the soft rock and the country-politan which emerged as a sub genre of this music in the 1970’s. It was well accepted by the wide variety of audiences during the same decade. The singers like John Denver, Glen Campbell and Anne Murray were some of the most admired artists of this genre. "RhineStone Cowboy" by Campbell is amongst the best and biggest crossover music hits. The songs in this music CD are still hummed by the teenagers and youngsters. Olivia Newton John is considered as the best female country vocal performer.

Outlaw country revolutionized this genre of music completely with the derived Honky Tonk sounds of late 1950’s. After 1935, the Western Swing Big Band leader Bob Willis used drums as the major instrument in his band Texas Playboy. The drums were readily used by the country musicians and the rockabilly groups till 1955. Later, they became significant in the country bands also. The electric guitar was used in the bands that were originated in the beginning of 1938. Arthur Smith achieved immense success with the Guitar Boogie a MGM records album that declared the beginning of guitar as the most influential instrument in the country band.

In past headlines it read, "Ax may be hovering over Mariah Carey...recording giant ready to drop singer."

Now wait a minute, didn't Mariah Carey sell well over 50 million albums since 1990? (Strictly speaking in the dollar terms, that's roughly 649 million dollars in album sales alone.) And wasn't she one of the hottest acts in the past decade and in the exclusive Top Ten All Time Artist who have the most consecutive #1 hits?

Okay, so she's not married to the head of Sony Records any more and who cares that she had an emotional breakdown (who wouldn't with the kind of pressure she has to deal with - I think I'd like to have a breakdown now!) - She's considered a liability? When her contract was reportedly worth an estimated 80 million dollars and trouble looming over an already unsteady economy, which has hit the music industry over the past several year in declining sales, especially since the tragic events that occurred on September 11th, it's no wonder the "ax" would fall on those with huge salaries.

With sales from her first release on Virgin/EMI only reaching 400,000 when it was released, this album has been a disappointment to record company execs as I am sure it was to Ms. Carey who has always been at the top of the charts until now. But doesn't everyone have a bad hair day? Of course, but not to the tune (excuse the pun) of 25 million dollars which is what Ms. Carey was reportedly paid for the first release, "Glitter" on her old label. Now mind you, I would love to make that kind of money, and hats off to Ms. Carey's people for negotiating that kind of deal, but the risk one takes in being the highest paid, is that you are usually the first one to go when times are tough.

While Ms. Carey might have had an easier time with her old label because of loyalty to her and the huge profits she has generated and still does for them, this brand new label had nothing but dollar signs and no loyalty to her financially. Hopefully, Alain Levy who replaced Ken Berry will be able to renegotiate Ms. Carey's contract instead of letting her go.

This was and still is today definitely yet another wake up call in an already floundering industry. With Record Companies going down and out and hanging out their shingles right and left (DreamWorks being the latest). Executives being fired here, there and everywhere. Artists trying to duck for cover so they aren't the next casualty; it's a scary proposition being a musician. Okay, so it's always been a scary proposition.

So I ponder...why are things so much worse then they used to be? Could it be that too much money is being paid at the top? Is there not enough promotion? Is there too much shifting and leveraging to get the best deal? Is the quality of the product not meeting the demands of the populace? Bingo! With the fragile state of this and so many other industries, 1 hit wonders mentality must go if the recording industry wants to not just survive, but thrive. (Ms. Carey does not fall into this category; other then they are trying to find the next Mariah Carey.) Quality, not quantity. The industry needs to stop the mass cookie cutter attitude by trying to produce the same acts with different people in them over and over again. It's like eating the same meal at different restaurants night after night. Different chefs, the same recipe, but none of the meals were as good as the first taste you had at your favorite restaurant. If you keep churning out the same act with different faces, eventually the fans will get tired of the original acts also and stop buying even their product.

Change is a good thing and new acts come up all the time, but change is not good when it is constantly happening and no one knows which end is up. The industry needs some stability and consistency, not only in the ranks, but also with the artists. Too many artists are pulled off the shelves before they even get off the ground, leaving the listening audiences confused and disgruntled. The labels have forgotten the fans and is only worrying about paying their costly mortgages, thereby losing all loyalty from the paying public.

If the audience is not happy, they won't buy the product. In addition, we seem to be seeing even in the bigger named artists, with only 1 song released off their albums to the listening public. Not many people want or can afford to buy an album for $11.98 with only 1 song they like on it anymore, even if they are loyal fans of the established artist. The general population is the ones who are suffering the most in this economy.

If there is little or no money coming in, then the day of the big contracts is gone. Some of the largest selling albums are ones with multiple songs on it that the listener likes. Take Shania Twain for example. Her albums are mega sellers with more then 1/2 the album on the singles charts at various times. Why are her albums huge? Because they are quality, and a great bargain. The buying populace wants a deal. The Record Industry seems to want to put out a little and expect to get a lot, and in doing so, they are losing the fan base in general. People are spending their money elsewhere.

They forgot that we are the fans and the fans have the buying power. Without the buying power, they lose their jobs, the big deals go away, and the labels go under. They need to stick with the artists once they have signed them, promote them, and if the first album doesn't work, try another one and work harder with a different strategy. Forget trying to get another Mariah Carey, N-Sync, or Shania Twain.

Use the talent that is there and churn out more then a 1 hit wonder. Then the buying public will come back and the fan base will be there for hopefully years to come. Look at acts like the Beatles, Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley, ABBA and Barbara Streisand to name a few. These acts stir the general public, and very few people have not heard of them. They still sell records and when they do a concert, it's sold out in a second. This is because of quality. They weren't churned out and then spit out.

Let's take ABBA for example. This is a group based in the 70's, and they haven't had a hit record in decades. They are also one of the biggest selling groups of all times, still selling albums today. Recently, they were offered a billion dollars to tour for one year. The turned it down (wish I could do that!). While that is a contradiction of what I said about those with the largest pay being cut first, it is in line with what I have been trying to say here all along - the bottom line is the fan base. If it's not there, the money will not come in, and it can't be there with a 1 hit wonder. Too much spending, and not enough quality product has caused the music industry to come crashing down to reality.

A little side note on Ms. Carey. I do wish all the success on her new CD (and it looks like she's hitting the top). She certainly deserves it. She has worked hard and worked smart for the most part and has earned the right to a deal of the magnitude she received.

Believe it or not, there have been many unsigned artists hitting the Billboard Charts (www.billboard.com). There are many ways for unsigned artists to sell their music online and even in retail stores. But is that all it takes to get you on the charts? No.

Here are the 5 Secrets To Hit The Billboard Charts:

1. Get a UPC code - Most CD duplication companies offer to put UPC codes on your CDs (some for free but most for a fee). It is worth the $30. You should not pay more than $30 for a UPC code. If a company charges you more than that, go to UPCexpress.com and get one for $29. You can give the CD duplication company your UPC code to print on your CDs. Whatever path, make sure you register one and get it on your CDs.

2. Register for SoundScan - How does Billboard create the top album charts? Because of Nielson SoundScan. Every time you buy a CD at a store or online, a computer system counts that CD purchase. At the end of every week, the top album sellers are released on Billboard. And if your CD does not have a UPC code, you don't qualify for Nielson SoundScan. But even having a UPC code doesn't automatically qualify you. You must register your CD on the SoundScan site. Once you register, your online CD sales and retail sales will be counted on the weekly charts (not all stores/online companies report to SoundScan but most credible companies do that sell music).

3. Set Up A Pre-order - What is a pre-order? It's a period of time (up to 8 weeks) where fans can buy your CD before it comes out. They receive the CD the week of your CD release. But all the sales up to the release of your CD counts towards your 1st week sales. For example, if you sell 300 CDs in a 6-week pre-order period and sell 200 the week the CD comes out, your first week sales will be 500 which would be good enough to hit the Billboard HeatSeeker Chart (usually 450 albums will qualify for the Top 150 on this chart).

***Make sure you set your pre-order up with a company who reports their CD sales to SoundScan. This is crucial. Simply email/call the company and ask.***

4. Bundles - Because of the downloading trend, a lot of people get their music for free online. Labels and bands are starting to "bundle" up their CDs with merchandise. Bundle up your pre-order CD with a Tshirt (CD/Tshirt for $15 etc.) and offer the CD seperately. Give your fans choices. But don't only keep the bundle up during the pre-order. Keep the bundles up permanently! You can bundle up your CD with posters, autograph booklets, stickers, Tshirts and hundreds of other iteams. This will definitely increase your sales.

5. Promote - I can't say this enough. You have to promote your music and don't stop. Read my post on 28 Essential Music Sites To Promote Your Music. MySpace gives you 500 comments a day. Make sure you max those out daily. If you believe in your band and music, you should not have a problem telling everyone about it.

Also, try to get website coverage or front page coverage on sites like Purevolume.com during the week of your release. This extra exposure will definitely increase your sales.

Shakira is shaking it (with her hips that "don't lie") into the studio to record her latest album, due out this year via Epic, with Pharrell Williams and Wyclef Jean. According to http://Billboard.com, the feisty Columbian singer has also recorded a duet for the as-yet-untitled album with Calle 13 and may collaborate with Algerian artist Khaled as well. The album will be Shakira's last for Sony Music before she enters into a multi-rights deal with Live Nation. Although Shakira has been out of the spotlight in the past year, she will take the stage with a host of other performers at a free concert held at Washington D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial January 18 as part of President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration festivities. Shakira first began giving Jennifer Lopez, the reigning Latin female pop star in the States, some stiff competition when she released her first English-language album in 2001. The Columbian native was born Shakira Isabel Mebarkak Ripoll into a poor family of both Columbian and Lebanese descent, and thus grew up surrounded by music of both cultures. Shakira also discovered the English language rock & roll of bands like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and the Cure and wrote her first song when she was just eight years old, began competing in (and winning) talent competitions at age 10 and learned to play the guitar when she was 11.

In 1990 the 13-year-old hopeful moved to Bogotá in order to pursue a modeling career but inked a record deal with Sony's Columbian division instead. Shakira's 1991 debut album, Magia (Magic), featured songs penned by the fledgling singer and made her one to watch in Columbia despite failing to break into the international scene. After her sophomore album, 1993's Peligro (Danger), wasn't what she hoped for, Shakira joined the cast of Columbian soap opera El Oasis but soon returned to recording with 1995's Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet), which gradually garnered success thanks to slow-catching singles "Estoy Aqui," "Dónde Estás Corazón," "Un Poco de Amro," "Se Quierei, Se Mata," "Antología" and "Pienso en Ti."

In order to capitalize on her rising star, Shakira signed Emilio Estefan (Gloria's husband) as her manager and released Dónde Están los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?) in 1998. The album was an even bigger seller than Pies Descalzos and managed to crack the American market, spending 11 weeks atop Billboard's Latin album charts and spawning two U.S. number one singles (on the Latin charts), "Tu" and "Ciega, Sordumuda." Gloria Estefan offered to translate Shakira's album to English but the headstrong singer decided to learn English and do it herself, keeping busy by performing on MTV's Unplugged in the channel's first-ever Spanish-language broadcast. The performance was commemorated in an album that garnered Shakira a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album; she performed "Ojos Así" from Dónde Están los Ladrones? at the 2000 inaugural Latin Grammy Awards ceremony and took home two awards that night.

On the brink of international, mainstream pop stardom, Shakira set to work on her first English-language record, Laundry Service. The newly brunette star issued her first single off the album, "Whenever, Wherever" in 2001 to instant success and Laundry Service debuted at number three on the American pop charts. Follow-up single "Underneath Your Clothes" was also a hit and the album, which was supported by an extensive tour, eventually went triple platinum. After releasing a live album Shakira took a break from her hectic schedule to work on her next record, placing Spanish and English-language songs on the Spanish-language Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1 and English-language Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 both appearing in 2005.Epic later reissued Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 with the bonus track "Hips Don't Lie," featuring Wyclef Jean and becoming an instant hit.

With the renewed interest in vinyl records, an old friend is becoming more important again- album cover art. There have been tens of thousands of album covers created throughout the years and there are some that are instantly recognized, while some remain obscure, but one thing is certain, album cover art is part of our pop culture and the rock and roll lexicon.

Let's explore a particularly innovative British art design company that specialized in creating instantly recognizable album cover- Hipgnosis. This creative group has made album covers for some of rock's dignitaries, including Pink Floyd, Genesis, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Yes and the Scorpions, to name a few.

Hipgnosis primarily consisted of artists Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey Powell and later on, Peter Christopherson. In 1968, Thorgerson and Powell were asked to design an album cover for Pink Floyd's second album called "A Saucerful Of Secrets." They completed that project and soon commissioned additional work from EMI, which included photos and album covers for Free, Toe Fat and the Gods.

Being art and film students, the pair was able to utilize the darkroom at the Royal College of Art, but after they graduated, they had to set up their own facilities and in early 1970 they rented a space and built their famous studio.

Their unique company name came from graffiti found on the door to their apartment. They liked the word because it sounded like hypnosis and they combined two somewhat contradictory terms, "hip" for new and cool and "gnosis," which related to ancient learning.

Hipgnosis' novel approach to album design was strongly photography-oriented, and they pioneered the use of many innovative visual and packaging techniques. In particular, Thorgerson & Powell's surreal, elaborately manipulated photos that utilized innovative darkroom tricks, multiple exposures, airbrush retouching, and mechanical cut-and-paste techniques were a film-based forerunner of what would, much later, be called photoshopping.

"We were self-taught," writes Powell in the book," For The Love Of Vinyl." "What we did was come up with ideas based on the music. The design ideas were poorly sketched in the early days and required a lot of accompanying blag to be understood. Our usual strategy was to talk the job through with each other and then use photography as a means to express it."

Hipgnosis got their real big break in 1973 when they were hired to do the cover for another Pink Floyd album, "Dark Side Of The Moon," which is one of the most recognized album covers in the world. After the success with the Floyd cover, they were in high demand and soon took on jobs for Led Zeppelin, Genesis, UFO, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel and The Alan Parsons Project, to name a few.

Peter Christopherson joined the company in 1974 as an assistant and later on he became a full partner. The firm employed many talented assistants, of particular note were freelance artists George Hardie, Colin Elgie, Richard Manning and Richard Evans.

Another interesting side note is that the company did not have a set fee for designing a particular album cover, instead they asked the musicians to "pay what they thought it was worth," a policy that would occasionally backfire according to Thorgerson.

Let's explore some of the stories behind the album covers:

Pink Floyd- Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)

Probably Hipgnosis' most famous work, the album was originally released in a gatefold LP sleeve designed by Hipgnosis and bore Hardie's iconic refracting prism on the cover. Inside the LP were two posters, one bearing pictures of the band in concert with the words PINK FLOYD broken up and scattered about, and the other being a slightly psychedelic image of the Great Pyramids of Giza taken on infrared film. The album was also the first Pink Floyd album to have picture labels on the record where it depicted a blue prism with black background and the credits written either in grey lettering (European issues) or white lettering (US and Canadian issues). Also included was a sheet of stickers of the pyramids.

The album is the third best-selling album of all time worldwide (not counting compilations and various artists soundtracks), and the 20th-best-selling album in the United States. Though it held the #1 spot in the USA for only one week, it spent a total of 741 consecutive weeks-over fourteen years-on Billboard's list of the top 200 best selling albums, longer than any other album in the history of music.

Led Zeppelin- Houses of The Holy (1973)

The concept for the cover was taken from Arthur C Clarke's Childhood's End. It is a collage of several photographs which were taken at the Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland, by Aubrey Powell. The two children who modeled for the cover were siblings Stefan and Samantha Gate. The photo shoot was a very frustrating affair and took ten days. Shooting was done first thing in the morning and at sunset in order to capture the light at dawn and dusk, but the desired effect was never achieved due to constant rain and clouds. The photos of the two children were taken in black and white and were multi-printed to create the effect of 11 individuals that can be seen on the album cover. The results of the shoot were less than satisfactory, but some accidental tinting effects in post-production created an unexpectedly striking album cover. The inner sleeve photograph was taken at Dunluce Castle near to the Causeway.

Jimmy Page has said that the album cover was actually the second version submitted by Hipgnosis. The first, by artist Storm Thorgerson, featured an electric green tennis court with a tennis racquet on it. The band was furious that Thorgerson was implying their music sounded like a "racket", the band fired him and hired Powell in his place.

Atom Heart Mother- Pink Floyd (1970)

The original album cover depicts a cow standing in a pasture with no text or any other clue that it was an album from Pink Floyd, although some later editions have the title and artist name added to the cover. The concept was the group's reaction to the psychedelic "space rock" imagery associated with Pink Floyd at the time; the band wanted to explore all sorts of music without being limited to a particular image or style of performance.

So the band requested that their new album cover have "something plain" on the cover, which ended up being the image of the cow. Storm Thorgerson, inspired by Andy Warhol's famous "cow-wallpaper," has stated that he simply drove out into a rural area near Potters Bar and photographed the first cow he saw. The cow's owner identified her name as "Lulubelle III." More cows appear on the back cover (again, with no text or titles), and on the inside gatefold. Again, an instantly recognizable cover, simple as it is.

Peter Gabriel (1980)

Peter Gabriel's third album, it contains two of Gabriel's most famous songs, the U.K. Top 10 hit "Games Without Frontiers" and the political song "Biko."

This album is often referred to as "Melt" due to its cover photograph by Storm Thorgerson. The photo was taken with a Polaroid SX-70 instant camera, and subsequently modified by Thorgerson or Gabriel, and one side of the portrait of Gabriel seems to be melting; although Thorgerson does not recall whether he or Gabriel manipulated the image.

...And Then There Were Three... Genesis (1978)

A rather gloomy and dark cover; it is one that Hipgnosis was not real keen on as Thorgerson explains:

"We were trying to tell a story by the traces left by the light trails. It was a torch, a car, and a man with a cigarette. The band was losing members and there were only three of them left. The lyrics of the songs were about comings and goings and we tried to describe this in photographic terms by using time-lapse. So there's a car going off to one side and then the guy gets out of the car, walks over to the front of it, and lights a cigarette. But as he walks he uses a torch and the car he was in leaves. There's a trail left by the car, a trail left by him as he's walking and then he lights a cigarette, which on the cover is where there's a flash of his face."

Still, whether the company was happy with the result or not, it is another amazing cover.

In Through the Out Door- Led Zeppelin

This original album featured an unusual gimmick: the album had an outer sleeve which was made to look like a plain brown paper bag and the inner sleeve featured black and white line artwork which, if washed with a wet brush, would become permanently fully colored. There were six different sleeves featuring a different pair of photos and the external brown paper sleeve meant that it was impossible for record buyers to tell which sleeve they were getting. The pictures all depicted the same scene in a bar (in which a man burns a Dear John letter), and each photo was taken from the separate point of view of someone who appeared in the other photos. In 1980 the album was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of best album package.

Storm Thorgerson recalls the design in his book "Eye of the Storm":

"The sepia quality was meant to evoke a non-specific past and to allow the brushstroke across the middle to be better rendered in color and so make a contrast. This self same brushstroke was like the swish of a wiper across a wet windscreen, like a lick of fresh paint across a faded surface, a new look to an old scene, which was what Led Zeppelin told us about their album. A lick of fresh paint, as per Led Zeppelin, and the music on this album... It somehow grew in proportion and became six viewpoints of the same man in the bar, seen by the six other characters. Six different versions of the same image and six different covers."

There are many, many ways to set yourself apart from the competition on eBay and get more than your fair share of your market.  You need to get a little bit creative and try to put yourself into your buyers' shoes.  What you need to do is absolutely shock your buyers at the level of service you provide.  I'm going to give you a few examples, but I'm sure you'll be able to think of many ideas on your own.

One thing you can do is offer an optional service for buyers where they can ship a gift to someone else.  You could offer gift-wrapping for free with any item over a certain price, and ship it with a gift message to anyone they choose.  There is one point to keep in mind here, however.  This type of service is sometimes taken advantage of by people who are using stolen PayPal accounts, so it is up to you to decide whether or not you wish to take that risk.  It certainly can be worth it, especially if you are selling items that are very commonly given as gifts.  It is also a great service during the Christmas holiday shopping season.

You should also go as far as you possibly can with regards to packing items for shipping.  Tossing a piece of delicate glassware into a box wrapped in a couple of layers of newspaper is not good packaging.  You should always take great care to carefully package everything you ship as carefully as possible.  Buyers will often make extremely glowing positive feedback posts for you if you go out of your way to pack the item carefully.  Packing is one extremely important area that you should never, ever skimp on.  Even magazines should be packaged with a little extra padding inside the mailer, especially if they are ten years old or older, or sell for over $10.

You might offer a small bonus inside the packages that you send out.  One seller that I made a purchase from gave me a sheet of stickers for free with my purchase of a sticker album.  The seller did not advertise this in the auction, so I was especially happy with this  Another seller included a beautiful bookmark for free with a book purchase, and that bookmark included her eBay seller ID and the URL to her auction listing on the back.  This was a great way to offer an unannounced bonus, as well as reminding me to visit her auctions again.  And yes, I have bought from her again!  Try to keep the bonus related to the item you have sold, if possible.  If it's not possible, a generic bonus is still something that sets you apart, and people will definitely appreciate the extra effort.

Include a personalized, hand-written thank you note with each purchase.  Your buyer is going to really appreciate that you took the time to thank them, and that you've included their name on the thank you note.  Even something very simple like, "Thank you, Lisa!" will go a long way toward making your buyer happier with their purchase.

Shipping very quickly is extremely important to the way people see you on eBay.  If you only ship once or twice per week, it is probably going to hurt your business somewhat.  If you really cannot ship any more often than that, it is extremely important to state this fact very, very clearly in your auctions!

One final point is that you should always answer every single e-mail quickly and courteously.  Even if you think a question is stupid or the tone of the e-mail is rude, be professional and respectful, and respond quickly.  That angry buyer might be a really nice person who is genuinely interested in buying from you, but just happened to be in a bad mood that day.

So that's my question to you; if I buy the four albums from the same seller, do I only pay the $2.98 shipping fee once, since they'll all presumably be packed together into a single package? Or do I pay it for all four, regardless of whether they're packed together or not?

EDIT: None of the buyers are Amazon directly. Would this apply if I bought directly from Amazon?

EDIT #2: I realize this is probably the wrong place to ask this, but I figure I'll get better (and quicker) answers here, because many of you probably have been in this exact situation.
EDIT #3: Thanks for the suggestion, but each of these albums costs about 7 or 8 dollars more if bought from Amazon, so in the end I wouldn't be saving money anyways.

One of the first tips I share with clients who want to prepare their home for sale . . . make your home look like it is ready to welcome the possessions of a new owner!

The following is a list of 5 simple, affordable ways you can up your houses "sell appeal" to attract the greatest number of buyers:

1. Begin at the beginning - THINK CURB APPEAL! You've heard it over and over again, but it certainly is worth repeating. First impressions are formed within eight seconds. . . and they begin with CURB APPEAL! Trim shrubbery, prune, add flowers and mulch. Put a fresh stain or coat of paint on the front door, and make sure that the color is appropriate for the style of the home, as well as compatible with other finishes i.e. roof shingles, siding, brick etc. When in doubt . . . keep it neutral. And if your front door needs replacing . . . replace it!

2. Get rid of the grapes - Seriously! I can't tell you how many homes I walk into and see the "1990's" fruit borders in the kitchen. Strip it! Then paint out the walls in a neutral tone such as creamy yellow or bisque to UPDATE THE LOOK set the stage for the new owners. And speaking of kitchens . . . don't forget to CLEAR THE COUNTERTOPS! It's quick and easy to do, and the benefits are huge. It is less distracting to your buyer, and will also make the room appear larger. And the same sage advice goes for your bathrrooms. Get rid of the floral wallcovering or the paisley border you stenciled years ago . . . Strip and Neutralize!

3. Stay unemotional, stay unemotioinal, and don't forget to STAY UNEMOTIONAL- How you live in a home and prepare it to sell are two totally different things. Remove knick knacks, family photographs, photo albums, your old golfing trophies, etc. Remember, you want them to be able to visualize THEIR trophies and family photographs on that wall! And definitely put your 'collections' away.

4. Empty and Rearrange - If a prospective buyer is even halfway serious about your house, know that they will open EVERY closet and drawer to get a 'feel' for how their things will fit. If your things are 'stacked up . . . and shoved in', this will send up a big RED FLAG, especially for women, and could be cause for them to walk away. And remember, DON'T forget the linen closet!

5. Do Spring cleaning - no matter what time of the year it is! Put your "buyers eyes" and Nose on . . . people buy what they both see, and smell! Every house, if it has been lived in at all, will have a few scuff marks, dings and dents as well as odors. Identify these negatives BEFORE your buyer does . . . and eliminate them.

Remember, you're upping your houses "sell appeal" by sending your buyers the message . . . "if you want to buy a nice house . . . your search is over . . . ours is ready to become yours!"
