Dance, if you want to put a description to it, is simply a form of art, as well as sport. It can be described as rhythmic body movements done gracefully to music. Dance is also used as an emotional release or sometimes used in spiritual or social interactions. Included in this art form are body movements meant to express ideas in a silent non-verbal way. This can also be seen among animals, bees being just one example. There are even some sports that fall under one type or form of partnership dance, such as figure skating, synchronized swimming and even martial arts if the training is done as a synchronized dance in a sport setting.
Through the ages dance has been an expression using movements and a way of expressing emotions of various sorts. It can be found as a ceremonial and competitive art form, social, artistic, moral and many cultural settings. Dance's movement can also be the way of expressing a story such as a hunt or a silent non-verbal way to express the emotions of a courtship ritual.
There are several competitions in dance that are judged on the performance. These dance types fall under the classical form and include ballroom dancing, the tango, ballet and the waltz. If you aspire to go into the field of dance as your career there are many paths available. There is professional dancing in one of many dance companies or a choreographer for the dance performances. You can also go the route of training dancers in traditional, ethnic and forms of ceremonial dance. When teaching your students they will be taught solo, partner and being part of a choreographed dance group.
Dance and music are definitely going to go together, because you cannot imagine dancing the blue Danube without the music playing in the background. That is the reason why both classical music as well as classical dance forms, evolved as musicians began to set their symphonies and Rhapsodies in a manner to which anybody who was hearing them could get up , glide, sway, and dip as his whim took him. Those able to dance without music do so because they have their own rhythm. Tap dancing is a great example of a dance form performed without music. In this case, the dance itself creates the musical rhythm by the rhythmic tapping of the feet.
The dance movements are supposed to relax and invigorate a person, because this sort of exercise not only gives him a pleasant workout, but also makes his body more flexible and graceful. The idea of dancing as a soothing and relaxing therapy is being used by therapists in the form of dance movement and dance therapy for better muscular coordination.
So whatever the reason may be, if the music is provocative enough to make you want to get up and dance, go for it!
