Lets face it. Real men don't dance. People tune in to popular dance shows not only to gawk at half-naked women but to mock their seemingly coordination-challenged partners. Dance lessons seem to be wasted on macho, dorky men, squirming complicated dance moves like their life depended on it.
Sometimes even professional male dancers don't get better treatment either. A majority of people don't understand the point in this: a grown man in tights splitting and bending in weird directions. To them, its unnatural.
And then, there's John Travolta. He's the 'go-to' guy for manly dance moves that leave women speechless. He isn't Michael Jackson but he knows how to 'flow'. 'Saturday Night Fever' made millions of men realize its okay to strut your stuff. If you want that kind of confidence on the dancefloor, here are a few ideas for your own DIY dance lessons:
1. Steer clear of ballroom-type costumes, including slicked back hair. Only professional dancers can get away with that while they're in 'Dancesport' competition. Dress a bit better than usual, and mix it with some attitude. Learn to dance with some respectable clothes.
2. Practice dancing to your favorite music. Pick out a really cool song and experiment. Reggae and R&B offer a lot of good dance vibes with their slow, steady beats. They can make you look smooth even if you're just bobbing your head around. Next, learn to dance with your hips. Elvis and Ricky Martin are famous for shaking their pelvis - women practically go into a coma just watching them perform.
3. Let James Dean teach you a thing or two. There's nothing like a kind of quiet confidence to sweep your dance partner off her feet. This requires a lot of mysterious smiling and a kind of hypnotic stare. This is great for slow dancing.
4. Use simple moves and only pull out the fancy stuff only if you've learned to do them right. Just use your hands to clap or snap your fingers while your hips are moving. Unless you're born with a freakish knack for moving your feet, don't raise expectations too much or you'll risk looking stupid in front of a crowd..
Dancing isn't scary if you got some real man confidence. Get your cue from the beat and let your body do the rest. If you're having fun, dancing makes it all worthwhile. Women just love man who knows his way around the dancefloor. Try it for yourself!
