So I start it and it instantly casts a spell with stills of DSOTM flashing on the screen and Roger fading ….. “An _expression of political, philosophical and humanitarian empathy that was desperate to get out”.

Boy, I thought I knew a lot about it but I was ‘Down and Out … It can’t be helped but there’s a lot of it about’.

Musically, Floyd were pioneers of futuristic sounds with the vision they had on the pieces which looked impossible in 1971, Money (Loop taping and sounds made in pot with coins, torn paper and a register), doubletracking and harmony vocals(Dave and Rick are masters of it), On the Run (Sonic experimentation with filters, oscillators and echoes).

One of the magical things which just happened, nobody planned, was the voices which would make the album what it is! Yes the voices, some of which at least, I never understood e.g. They are prominent in this dvd … It’s the moment gonna kill ya. Say like if you give them a quick shock, sharp shock they don’t do it again. Dig it I mean I could have given them …… … I need it once, It’s only difference you’ve between right and wrong. I mean good manners don’t cost nothing, do they? Aaye …. (US AND THEM). I certainly was in the right, Why should I be afraid of dying, I don’t really know … I was very drunk at the time.

Roger talks about his views on the songs .. Us and Them, It still holds good after 30 years to ask us the question whether or not, we are capable enough of being humane? What more could aptly be put in today’s world? Brain Damage – It’s about Syd and defending the notion of being different.

It also includes bonus material about nitty gritty of the album such as

Rick’s chord progressions for ‘Us and Them’ (all the chords relating to D instead of A – music from Zabriskie Point) & ‘Breathe’ (G to Em – inspired by Miles Davis’ jazz chord) and all of Rick’s extremely compelling organ and piano in DSOTM.

Dave!!!!!!!!! What can I say? Watching him in the studio with spectacles was funny. He is the god! Period. All the leads, riffs and effects … outstanding. Slide Guitar? Ooooooooooh! Wish I had one of these …

It leaves a lot of space but doesn’t hold back your imagination. Prism of DSOTM takes one ray of light, your mind, and when it leaves it, Just range of colors ….. Any color you like! It is the most inspirational album which is wrongfully mentioned as the most
depressive one may be! There’s nothing contrived about it. It’s just eternal …

This is not “The Dark Side of the Moon”, it is a documentary styled sleeping aid about the album, if you can imaging that. It is a collection of talking heads telling way too much about their internal realities with a couple of bars of the songs thrown in. I doubt anyone other than the speakers and a few music historians care two beans about what they have to say. If you want to hear the music, buy the CD, because there isn’t any music on this DVD that’s worth hearing. This DVD should have a warning label that it is not intended for recreational use.

“A Chorus of Storytellers” (11 tracks; 50 min.) starts off with the intimate “Perro”, which is followed by a mesmorizing “Blank Pages”. I’m not a big fan of the band’s non-instrumental songs (meaning with lead vocals), but “There Is A Wind” is not bad at all. Track 6, the middle track of the album, “Stand Still” is one of my favorites on here, starting off with loud drums, over which Jimmy LaValle’s keyboards come in, to then go into a full band mode, just great. A coupe of great, dreamy tracks follow (“Summer Fog”, “Until The Last”). “We Are” is the second track to feature vocals. The album finishes with “Tied Knots”, a seminal, dreamy Album Leaf track, and what a great way to close this album out. In all, this album is an excellent album, for me the best since “One Day I’ll Be On Time”. Welcome back, guys!

I’ve seen the Album Leaf in concert only once, in 2001, in support of the “One Day” album (opening for Sigur Ros, no less) and what a fabulous concert that was (has it really been that long ago?). Can’t wait to see these guys again live. If you wonder where you can hear this album, check out WOXY (BAM! The Future of Rock and Roll), the internet-only station that brings the best indie-music in the country. Meanwhile, “A Chorus of Storytellers” is highly recommended.

Most mainstream pop acts are so desperate and hungry for attention, that they abandon any sembalance of modesty or subtlety, and that really refelcts in their music adversely in my opinion. Where as The Album Leaf exudes a quiet dignity, and a restrained artistic beauty. Their music is often thoughtful and meditative, a quality often absent from more commercial offering’s. They don’t feel the need to wave their hands in the air, and shout “look at me!!” (figuratively speaking)

This album may not be their best, and at times it does come across as overly familiar. However, it did manage to sustain my interest all the way through. Even their least effective album (in a safe place) manages to achieve a level of quality that often goes unmatched within the industry.

If you are a fan of The Album Leaf, then there is no reason why “A Chorus of Storytellers” shouldn’t be in your collection.

Everything that came after “In a Safe Place” sounds very similar, but never quite captures what that record did. I think LaValle found a formula and he doesn’t show any signs of abandoning it anytime soon. While Storytellers was recorded as a full band as opposed to mostly just LaValle, I don’t think it makes that much of a difference in how the record sounds. It’s definitely a step up from the previous record ‘Into the Blue Again’ which sounded like leftovers from ‘In a Safe Place,’ but there’s nothing different about this record. The band switches things up a little bit with a few more songs with vocals, but like the previous albums, Storytellers keeps a pretty consistent pace throughout the record and within each song.

If the Album Leaf can be criticized for anything, it would be predictability and lack of dynamics. Part of what makes a band like Sigur Ros as captivating as they are is that their songs and albums have so much build up and release. The Album Leaf stays consistent throughout their songs and entire records. There are no crescendos or slow burning build-ups. Picking a random song off of any of their last three records will give you a pretty good idea what all of those records sound like.

Maybe it sounds like I’m being too harsh to give this a four-star review. Perhaps, but again, I do really like this band. Fans won’t be disappointed, but if you’ve lost interest in this band because they’ve failed to keep your attention, this record won’t do anything to change that.

The novel opens with one such return, however. Gina (second oldest), 39, brings her new boyfriend, Philip, to meet her parents and see her rather larger-than-life childhood setting, Allersmead. The house is a rambling Edwardian pile with seven bedrooms, presided over still by Alison, husband Charles and the Swedish au pair, Ingrid, who arrived 40 years before and has never left.

“The kitchen was the heartland of Allersmead. Of course. That is so in any well-adjusted family home, and Allersmead was a shrine to family….There were children’s drawings still tucked behind the crockery on the dresser, a painted papier-mâché tiger on a shelf, alongside a row of indeterminate clay animals that someone made earlier. There were named mugs slung from hooks: Paul, Gina, Sandra, Katie, Roger, Clare.”

Philip is intrigued, even a little envious, impressed by the many photos and mementos, the large garden, Alison’s wonderful and abundant food, the idea of the family teeming over the place.

“Gina continued to hear voices, her life was still flashing at her. It seemed odd that Philip could be impervious to this, that a person with whom one had become so absolutely intimate could be so perversely ignorant. Not know. Not see and hear. One is sealed off, she thought. So is he. So’s everyone. No wonder there’s mayhem.”

Her father, Charles, however, has made an art form out of sealing himself off from the mayhem. “Charles is immersed – in his train of thought, in the organization of words, of sentences. Time passes – but, for him, it seems to stand still. He looks out the window occasionally, unseeing, thoughts tumble in his head. He is elsewhere, inside his mind, in pursuit of an argument, a sequence.”

With the help of a small private income, Charles has devoted his life to writing books on any subject that captures his interest. The books are (or were) accessible and widely read, although not by anyone in his immediate family. His study seems an alien, sacrosanct territory inside the fecund chaos of the family manse.

He emerges for meals, engages newcomers (like Philip) in arcane discussions, handles the finances. Alison does everything else. With Ingrid’s somewhat implacable assistance. No one seems to know what Ingrid thinks, or ever thought, about anything, yet she is such an integral part of the family Allersmead cannot be imagined without her.

Naturally there are secrets. What family doesn’t have secrets?

These begin to emerge after Gina and Philip depart for home and the novel proceeds from various points of view at various times over the last 40 years. Gina’s 8th birthday, “of which everyone will remember something different.” A summer holiday in Cornwall, which Katie remembers as “one commotion after another,” and Roger remembers as “amazing.” “I had that kite. I got seriously into marine biology.”

There were the cellar games, which excluded adults so completely that they knew nothing about them. The sibling rivalry between cerebral Gina and pretty Sandra. Paul’s youthful binges, which have somehow never stopped.

And there is the greatest gulf of all. “…their parents seemed to hover – presences that are entirely known, familiar and also unreachable, enigmatic.” As adults the children wonder about them to each other. The six children were obviously Alison’s raison d’etre, but what about Charles? Did he want that many? Did he want any?

Alison works hardest at keeping unpleasantness at bay. It’s more than sweeping things under the carpet. Alison will do almost anything to preserve her happy family.

And this family has one very big secret, known to all. “Not that there were conversations, exchanges, comments. No one has wished to discuss it; if ever the facts of the matter seemed to smolder dangerously, there would be a concerted move to stamp out the embers, to move away, to find safe territory elsewhere.”

This secret comes out fairly early in the novel, the biggest among other, smaller crises that have been dealt with and set aside. With her sharp wit and sympathetic understanding of human nature, Lively explores the ways families conspire in their secrets, the way memories inform a life and each life makes different memories of the same experience, the way one “happy family” is eight individual people all sequestered inside their own heads, all striving after their own interests.

For the reader Alison and Charles emerge as both repellant and sympathetic characters. To their children they remain, determinedly, enigmas.

An absorbing, witty portrait of family in all its warts and warmth, Lively’s latest will please her fans with its sharp characterizations and absorbing narrative path.

I’m not really sure what kind of band you’re in, but I like these band Tees. They’re fun, young, colorful, catchy, and I feel like I can wear it with almost anything and look cool.

I don’t know much about this guy, as I’m a Brit, but I bet he felt a bit more than just grief on 22 November 1963. He must have been really pissed at losing his meal ticket.

I remember hearing the JFK heard this record and liked it. You never could do anything like this today.

All have better production than the Blueprint.
BTW, I feel the need to say that Def Jux have terrible beats usually. They are part of what is causing the stereotype that underground rap has crappy beats.

RHH2: I would put Madvillainy and A Piece of Strange among the best produced albums. IMO better than Blueprint, but not like top 10.

What do you get when you put together a bunch of guys with good technical music background, no talent as composers and a vague common interest on world peace, oriental wisdom and saving the whales?

You get exactly this, The Yes Album. If you add overinflated egos after a few years of succesful albums, what you get is Topographic Oceans. But by the time they did The Yes Album they were relatively unknown -and that is what saves the thing to a certain point.

My first impression is they sound an awful lot like the Flight of the Conchords. But without the intentional humor. If you really like the music of Flight of the Conchords, musically, not specifically for the humor, then you might dig this.

I found the tracks interesting enough musically to keep around for now.

“The Light” purrs into life and then washes into liquid solitude in a reverberating perfection that opens up into “Always For You.”

“Shine” is rigid and dreamy like ice melting into hot chocolate and wolves running through snow. “Writings on the Wall” is moody and revelatory with solitary violin haunting an emotional landscape with indistinct vocals. This song melts into “Red Eye” as notes echoes through cavernous underground chambers splintering off stalactites and diving into deep luminous pools. Crystalline textures dance with warm ambience echoing out in all directions. Once this haunting track takes hold of you it doesn’t let you go and takes you on an edgy ambient fusion.

“See in You” continues the instrumental mood with snappy rhythmic beats that seems to blur out into a mellow soul tuning introspection. More like poetry than music, at times this is a study of tone.

“Into the Sea” is slightly more reticent than the previous selections and this creates an element of tension throughout as the track tries to break free. As if seeking a destiny, the song finally moves from swirling in circles to an exciting flourish. Ancient voices seem to be calling from faraway lands and then they dissipate into a silky wave.

“Wherever I Go” arrives and takes over in a moody orchestration and mellow vocals. The instrumentation is striking and ecstatic with an intriguing ending that makes your head spin.

“Wishful Thinking” is soothing classical piano in delicate notes echoing off concert hall walls and then this solitary intimacy warms to sweet winter lullabies. The violin is especially relaxing and this track seems to embrace a momentum that moves out of the deep cold earth into a sky of crystalline beauty. “Broken Arrow” has hardly ended when you feel you want to begin the experience all over again. Slightly addictive!

“Into the Blue Again” is exciting and ambient with worlds of textures and creativity to absorb.

At these times I found music from the Album Leaf providing necessary therapy and the perfect accompanying soundtrack to my pacing. It’s like not knowing what to wear so you grab that pair of jeans that never got ripped or torn, just more soft and faded. Then you pulled on the pair of scuffed boots and a white linen shirt all wrinkled. It may not have been a Saville Row haberdashery statement, but you felt good and comfortable. You felt like a new you but one you already knew well and liked.

Into The Blue Again continues that feeling and instant familiarity. This is music with class, relying on both the current art of technology, but the oh-so essential organic, earthly substances also. I did not turn back flips when I heard of this imminent release coming. It’s not that kind of music. It’s more a personal thing. It’s not like Jimmy LaValle wrote this music for you in particular, but listening to this makes it so.

Ambient, melodic, and celestial this music will never be earth shattering. But some monarch butterflies took flight in Malaysia and the tremble wound up here as we felt cool breezes parting our hair, billowing her thin cotton skirt all aflutter, along with my linen shirt as I stood back, hands tucked in my jean pockets, smiling and admirably taking in the views on one of life’s perfect days…..and these songs carried the mood unconditionally. Welcome the comfort zone.

For the price, this is a fantastic photo album. The quality is exceptional, the binding is secure, it has room for tons of photos, holds photo discs and negatives, and, of course, has acid-free inserts.

They’re made of bonded leather, so it’s not the most expensive leather you can buy, but it’s not bad.

Overall, I’m completely satisfied with the purchase of this album.
